High Dynamic Range Imagery HDR

Dynamic Range is the ratio between the bright and dark areas in a scene. HDR is a technique for creating image files which can encompass the entire range of real world tonal values.

To produce a HDE image aof a scene with an excessively high luminance range you udst capture a number of 8 or 16 bpc (bits per channel)  images using different exposures, and merge them into a single DHR 32 bpc image. The number of images required will depend on the lumanance range of the scene.

A 32 bpc HDR image file contains far too many tones to be viewed on a monitor or sent to a printer. It is only possile to view a small range of tones at a time. Tone Mapping is a process of controlling how the extended range of tones in a 32 bpc HDR image file are compressed and manipulated to produce a conventional 8 or 16 bpc image, which can be viewed or printed.

My Canon EOS 5D Mark II as do most Canon SLR camera have Auto Exposure Bracketing (AEB) settings that allows the camera to automatically bracket exposure up to ± 2 stops in 1/3 stop increments for three successive shots. In addition to the exposure bracketing, the user can set the exposure compensation so the bracketting can be shifted to the ± 4 stop exposure but still only bracket within 2 stops.

I have seen discussions on various web forums about the number of shots that are needed to producing HDR and there seems to be differing opinions if 3 are sufficient or more should be used due to the dynamic range of the scene. Those wanting to expose more than 3 images complain about the Canon's ability to shoot only a 3 shot bracket. There does appear to be a relatively easy work around as follows.

" Ridiculous. AEB can also be used very easily for bracketing for HDR. Manually adjusting each exposure can certainly be done, but increases the chances of movement between frames.

Even with Canon's 3-exposure AEB limit, I can bracket 9 to 12 shots extremely rapidly -- much, MUCH faster than I could manually shot-by-shot. For shots that include the sky (in which the clouds are ALWAYS moving), this can mean the difference between virtually unnoticeable ghosting in the clouds and an unusable final image.

 Getting more than 3 shots isn't really all that complicated. Your exposure meter in your viewfinder shows you where all three brackets are placed. I use 1-stop brackets most of the time (because I found that with the software I use, the smaller gap between exposures produces better results).

Meter your shot as you would for a single exposure. If you normally "expose to the right," ignore that and meter for "0" in your viewfinder for HDR work. Set your camera to bracket 3 shots. Set your dial to jump in 1-stop increments. Dial your exposure until the longest exposure of your bracket (the notch on the left) is two stops above "0" (to the right) of your meter. Take three shots. Dial back to put your center notch at "0." Take three shots. Dial back to put the shortest exposure (the notch on the right) two stops below (to the left) of "0."

9 exposures, from -4 to +4, in 1-stop increments. That will give you a pretty good range for most scenes and just adjust how many brackets you need accordingly.

With a little practice, you can take a 9-bracket set like this without losing much more time than someone shooting a camera capable of more bracketed shots.

If you choose to bracket at something different than 1-stop increments, you may have to adjust your math a bit to determine how far to dial for your starting bracket, but the basic concept remains the same.

Photoshop Presentation

Photoshop Presentation will be on "How to Create Flaming Hands in Photoshop" which comes from a video tutorial of the same name from the Picturesocial The Network for Photographers website.




The tutorial contains quite a few techniques listed below. However, the author makes a mistake early in the video, creating a group of layers, which he discovers later in the video that he rectifies although at a fast pace but a viewer with minor experience should be able to understand the fix and what not to do at the earlier stage when the grouping took place. Even with the problems I felt the video offered good insights into a number of techniques photographers can use. I try to be a minimalist in 'fixing' photos and seldom use Photoshop, generally I only use LightRoom3 to edit work, so this was a great learning experience for me. I think I'll be doing more with PS5.

How to create flaming hands in Photoshop

The online tutorial has a problem that the author found in the middle and had to make a number of corrections that made it disjointed. Hopefully I’ll be able to go through it without any problem.
Things covered in the tutorial:
Levels, masking the levels layer, brush tool, changing blend of layers, Transforming, Warping, combining images, Duplicating flipping layers, Grouping Layers, colour overlays, colour balance mask, adding a distortion wave, shortcut commands.
Open 4 images in PS – show final then close and go to main image.  The two flame images I grabbed from a Google Images search for flames.
1.    Main image a little light Darken with Level (move mid tone down to 75)
2.    Fire will have a glow around the hands so
3.    Add a mask to the levels layer
4.    Choose Brush tool (B) set size to about the size of the hands ( the bracket keys will change size [ smaller, ] larger) set foreground colour to black (X swaps between B&W) Click brush circle over each hand.
5.    Bring in Flame 1 use the Move tool (V)
6.    Name the layer Flame 1
7.    Change the blend mode to Screen
8.    Transform the flame by Cmd + T (Make taller, bring in sides, place on hand)
9.    Right click and choose Warp (bring in bottom to fit hand, move to make realistic) When finished click Tick Mark at top of page
10.  Add a layer mask to the Flame 1 level and with the Brush tool (b) take away the fire outside the hand. May need to Zoom in  (z) or Zoom out (Cmd+z)
11.  Bring in Flame 2 – Rename layer, change blend mode to screen, transform and shape, warp – right click in transform, click on tick mark to confirm, add a layer mask, use the brush to get flames off areas of hand.
12.  Now we need to intensify the fire – Select Flame 1 and Duplicate the layer (Cmd+J)
13.  Select the duplicate layer and Transform (Cmd+T) right click and Flip Horizontal – mover layer over Flame 2 make adjustment then check the tick mark to confirm.
14.  Go to Flame 2, duplicate the layer, Transform (Cmd+T) right click and Flip Horizontal – mover layer over Flame 1 make adjustment then check the tick mark to confirm.
15.  Select all 4 Flame layers and put them into a group (Cmd+G or Layers > Group Layers)
16.  We need to intensify the glow. Create a new layer and name Glow
17.  With your brush tool selected make it about the size of the palm and click. Doesn’t matter what the foreground colour is.
18.  Set the Fill to 0
19.  Click on the FX and choose Colour Overlay
20.  Set blend mode to Colour Dodge click on the red box and choose a colour more like the orange of the fire.  Tutorial used FF4200. I found I had to reduce the opacity.
21. We have the flames but no glow on my arms or clothing.
22.  Add a Colour Balance layer and a layer mask. Mask is white need to be black. Foreground colour black and select the mask and (Opt + Del) will make it black.
23.  Set the red to 40-50 and the yellow about 20.
24.  Use the brush tool and paint with white to add glow to arms, face, cloths.
25.  Show difference with layer on and off.
26.  Now lets try to make the fire more wavy. We need to Merge into 1 Layer with the Colour Balance layer selected. (Shift + Option + Cmd +E).
27.  Name the layer Wavy
28.  Select Filter > distort > wave
a.     # of generators 2
b.    wavelength min 10  max 215
c.     Amplitude min 15    max 115
d.    Scale Horiz 25%   Vert. 50%
e.     Type – Sine
f.      Unidentified area doesn’t matter
g.    Move the sliders around to decide what you like
29.  Add a Layer Mask on the Wavy layer and make it black (opt + del and foreground black)
30.  Brush the fire with white.  Can correct mistakes by changing brush to black.
31.  Reduce opacity to about 50%  or whatever you like.

Workshop 6 Close Ups

Participants:  Paul Livingston & Zhi-Ren Chow

Close Up Workshop involved taking two separate close up images. One was of a subject of our choice and the other was a postage stamp. Our choice was the finial on a 1914 sterling silver spoon depicting an Emu. We used a glob of Blue Tack to stand the spoon upright so we were able to get the image without a shadow which would have happened had the spoon been flat on the table. Our light source was two fiber optic lights. The camera was custom calibrated for the light using a grey card. We used a 50mm lens and  25mm and 12mm extension tubes.

For the stamp photo we used a 50mm lens and the 25mm extension tube.

Panorama

I took advantage of the sunshine on Sunday evening to try out my panorama skills. Shots were taken Kingston foreshore. Two panoramas are shown here a horizontal landscape, Panorama 1, and a vertical building shot, Panorama 2.

Three images panning from left to right with swans in the foreground and Russell Officers in the background. Images imported from CF Card into Lightroom3 and then taken into PS5 using the LR3 Merge to Panorama in Photoshop.

Panorama 2

Kingston Foreshore the Glassworks building. Four images used from the below LR3 screen capture, bottom three and the top right hand image. 



As with Panorama 1 images were loaded to LR3 and the sent to Panorama in PS5. Below is the resulting image. Obviously the perspective of the image is way off because the initial image had too much foreground thus distorting the overall merge. 



I could have deleted the above panorama and done it again only using 3 images without the one the included the parking lot, grass that caused the majority of the perspective problem. Rather than do that I decided to play with some other techniques. 

First I cropped the image eliminating the blacktop and the the concrete stops. Then I used the ruler tool to get the vertical straight, then used the Transform > distort > perspective to bring the image into a less falling over view and finally cropped to suit. 





While doing some panorama stitching I found there were some minor areas that did not align correctly. A quick search on the Internet found a tutorial with instruction of ways to fix misaligned panorama images. Panorama 3 Parliament House (image submitted for assignment)

Seven image stitch. Originally shot with the idea of having a large foreground in image with Parliament house further to the back to give the feeling of a large open space in the fore court. The stitch was not as pleasing as envisaged.  I chose to crop a substantial portion of the foreground giving the image a better feel and balance. I could have had the image totally devoid of people as there were periods when I was there that the space was completely empty and other times filled with bus loads of tourists. I waited until I could get a couple of people into the image to lend a sense of scale to it. Image 3 has a single subject and image 4 has three subjects, the one on the left being the same person as image 3. When stitched, due to the overlapping, photoshop discarded the portion of image 4 that contained the woman. I could have manually brought her back into the image by going into the layers and painting back the mask that hid her. My choice was to keep the minimal number of people in the image. The man in the foreground and the one closer to the building provided the sense of scale I wanted and the woman in the middle would not have added to the image. Another noticeable feature I chose to leave in the photo is the lone backpack on the ground on the left hand sided between the 4th and 5th bollard. While it would have been very easy to clone it out I enjoyed the irony of having a 'mystery package' sitting in the open and it gives something else for the viewer to consider, especially those security minded people. Could it be a bomb set for an unsuspecting tourist or security person or remote detonation when a tour group approaches? It actually belongs to the fellow in the foreground who was moving to the centre of the courtyard to take a photo.

   

  





Panorama 4 - Darling Harbour - My Favourite panorama BUT ...



Lost my nodal point.
This is probably my favourite of all the panoramas taken. Several of us made a trip to Sydney to attend a photo seminar starting after lunch so we decided to try get a few shots at Darling Harbour before we headed to the North Shore. We only had about 30-45 minutes to shoot. This shot was taken from the deck at the Maritime Museum before the security guard asked me to stop. There was a short delay having to deal with a security guard and going into the office to request authority/permission to photograph from someone in administration. There was no problem and we were granted permission to shoot.

The problem is I did not have a panorama head with me so took it just using a tripod and there are several places along the glass wall that don't match up. I tried using all the stitching modes in PS5 but in all cases still had the problem with the glass wall. I also tried manually fixing but could not restore the glass breaks. I tried reducing the number of images to try to save it. There are 10 images and I tried with 5 and 7. I also tried painting back some of the stitched masks. I didn't want to crop the image above the glass breaks because it would ruin the feel of the image.
Just goes to show that you don't always need special equipment but sometimes it sure would save the day.

Calibrating and Profiling a Display Device

Eye One Monitor Calibration performed 9 May 2012 - Monitor DigiDarkrm 12 - software would not work on my normal Monitor DigiDarkrm 13. Before starting on this monitor reset the color profile since three other students had calibrated the monitor prior to my go at it.

Reviews of Monitor Calibration Systems


After reviewing the various monitor calibration systems and considering that I do some printing, up to A3+, using my Canon i9950 it seems that my next purchase of a calibration system should include one that will also profile print output. Currently I am using a Spyder 2 and find it excellent in calibrating one of my monitors. One downfall of the Spyder 2 is it only allows one monitor profile, where as, as the later models Spyder 3 and reviews of the yet released Spyder 4 allow multiple monitor calibration. I will definately be in the market for a new calibration with the Mac upgraded OS Lion which does not support the older Spyder 2.

While the X-Rite i1 hardware and software seems to be a preferred system for monitor and print profiling the cost, for me, is prohibitive considering the limited amount of printing I do. With that in consideration the X-Rite Colour Munki is falls withing the acceptable budget limit.
